Solar energy in the service of Alpine heritage

Gstaad and the Saanenland embody the very essence of the traditional Alpine chalet. For more than a century, the resort has welcomed a discerning international clientele who value the village's preserved authenticity and the rigour of its local building regulations.

The technical challenge is considerable: installing solar panels without altering the traditional character of chalets in weathered timber, shingle roofs and vernacular Bernese architecture. This is the expertise Amperwatt has developed since our very first projects in the region.

Our approach to the traditional chalet

The Saanen municipal regulations are among the strictest in Switzerland in terms of architectural aesthetics. Any modification visible from public spaces requires a permit, and conventional photovoltaic solutions (blue panels on silver aluminium frames) are systematically refused.

Our installations in Gstaad use exclusively:

  • Full-black panels with matt black frames — invisible from a distance
  • Solar tiles that replicate the look of larch shingles
  • In-roof integration (rather than on-roof mounting) for perfect alignment with the existing roof covering
  • Concealed cabling routed through existing technical spaces

All our installations in the Saanenland have obtained municipal permits without any appeal or objection.

Performance at high altitude

Gstaad, at an altitude of 1'050 metres, enjoys exceptional annual sunshine: around 2'000 hours of sun, compared with an average of 1'700 on the Swiss Plateau. The region is one of the most favourable in Switzerland for photovoltaic production.

The effect of altitude on production

Atmospheric conditions at altitude significantly increase the yield of installations. The main factors are:

  • A purer atmosphere (less pollution, less humidity)
  • Lower temperatures, which improve cell efficiency
  • The reflection effect of snow in winter (up to +30% production)
  • Reduced cloud cover in winter thanks to temperature inversions

A 15 kWp installation in Gstaad produces an average of 17'500 to 19'000 kWh per year, equivalent to the total consumption of a 300 m² family chalet including an electric vehicle and a heat pump.

Canton of Bern subsidies

The canton of Bern offers an attractive cantonal incentive programme for photovoltaics:

  • Cantonal subsidy: CHF 200 to CHF 400 per installed kWp, capped at CHF 8'000
  • Municipal subsidy from Saanen: additional support for residents
  • Pronovo (federal): between CHF 1'500 and CHF 5'000 depending on capacity
  • Tax deduction: 100% of the investment over three years

Combined support can reach 35 to 40% of the initial investment.

The Saanenland's distinctive features

Strict architectural regulations

The municipality of Saanen imposes particularly rigorous building regulations, considered among the strictest in Switzerland. Any roof modification requires prior authorisation, and processing times can be as long as 2 to 4 months.

Our legal and technical team prepares all permit applications in full, including:

  • Landscape integration plans at 1:50 scale
  • Before/after photomontages from protected viewpoints
  • Technical note on architectural integration
  • Materials and finishes dossier

Alpine logistics

Projects in Gstaad require careful planning. Access roads may be restricted in winter, and some chalets can only be reached by unpaved tracks. Our logistics include:

  • All-terrain vehicles for deliveries to remote areas
  • Teams trained for Alpine conditions
  • Local storage of materials for rapid response
  • Coordination with local concierge services for access

Absolute discretion

In Gstaad, discretion is part of the service: works scheduled around your stays, coordination with concierge services and house managers. Our teams operate under a strict non-disclosure agreement, with no public communication, no unauthorised photographs and no external mention of the projects.
