Solar energy at altitude

Verbier and the Val de Bagnes form one of the most prestigious Alpine destinations in the world. At 1'500 metres above sea level, the resort enjoys exceptional conditions for photovoltaic energy production, but it also imposes rigorous technical constraints that few installers have mastered.

For several years, Amperwatt has been supporting chalet owners in Verbier in the design and installation of bespoke photovoltaic systems. Our clients particularly value our mastery of Alpine constraints: extreme snow loads, wide temperature swings, intense UV exposure and architectural integration with traditional timber.

The altitude advantage

Contrary to popular belief, a photovoltaic installation in Verbier produces more than an equivalent installation in the lowlands. Three factors contribute to this:

  • The cleaner air at altitude transmits solar radiation more effectively
  • Colder temperatures improve the efficiency of photovoltaic cells (a panel loses 0.4% efficiency per degree above 25°C)
  • Snow reflection in winter increases the irradiation received by the panels by up to 30%

A 12 kWp installation in Verbier produces an average of 14'500 to 16'000 kWh per year, 15 to 30% more than a comparable installation in Geneva.

Case study: 6-bedroom chalet in La Tzoumaz

14 kWp installation on a shingle roof. Annual production: 16'800 kWh. Self-consumption: 85% (with a 20 kWh battery). Annual savings: CHF 3'200. Net investment after subsidies: CHF 28'500. Return on investment: 9 years.

Technical challenges specific to Verbier

Snow loads

In Verbier, snow loads can reach 500 kg/m² in winter. Our installations use only mounting structures certified for these extreme conditions, with safety margins twice those required by the minimum standards. The panels we select withstand static loads of 5'400 Pa (equivalent to 540 kg/m²).

Temperature swings

Temperatures can range from +35°C in summer to −40°C in winter. Our panels and inverters are certified for this full range. Cabling runs in special conduits resistant to UV and extreme cold. Inverters are installed in temperature-controlled enclosures.

Architectural integration

Verbier chalets must comply with strict architectural specifications: larch wood, slate, landscape integration. We offer three tailored solutions:

  • Solar tiles that replace traditional shingles — invisible from the outside
  • Full-black panels with bespoke frames in weathered larch
  • Façade integration on secondary structures (annexes, garages, carports)

Access and logistics

High-altitude projects require specific logistics. We work with teams trained in installation under Alpine conditions and use suitable transport and lifting equipment. Projects are scheduled around optimal weather conditions (generally May–October).

Subsidies in Valais

The canton of Valais offers subsidies that can be combined with federal Pronovo support:

I. Cantonal photovoltaic subsidy

The canton of Valais pays an additional subsidy for residential photovoltaic installations. The amount varies according to installed capacity and reaches up to 20% of the cost of the works for installations under 30 kWp.

II. Municipal subsidy (Bagnes)

The municipality of Bagnes offers an additional subsidy of CHF 500 per installed kWp, capped at CHF 5'000. This support is available to both main and second-home residents of the municipality.

III. Tax deduction

The entire investment is deductible from taxable income, as everywhere in Switzerland. For owners of rental chalets, specific depreciation allowances may apply.

Total combined support: up to 40–50% of the investment cost, depending on your tax situation and municipality.
